This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 6th July.
LATEST NEWS ON MORSE TEST CENTRES.
---------------------------------
As this news was being prepared last Tuesday, the following
centres had been notified to RSGB HQ. The county will be given first
followed by the dates on which tests are available in that county,
up until the end of August. Prospective candidates should contact
RSGB for application form. We must stress that applications will be
accepted only if sent on the official form. Places are allocated on
a first-come-first-served basis only.
So here are the details, county first, and then the dates:-
Essex - 30th July and 1st, 15th, 28th August.
Cornwall - 31st July, and 28th August.
Somerset - 3rd August.
Guernsey - 7th August.
Nottinghamshire - 9th August.
Derbyshire - at the Derby mobile rally on 10th August.
Dorset - at the Flight Refuelling Hamfest '86 on
10th August.
Mid-Glamorgan - 10th August.
Lincolnshire - 12th August
Avon - 13th August.
Berkshire - 13th August.
Northamptonshire - 13th, 14th, 20th August.
Merseyside - at the Red Rose rally on 17th August.
Shropshire - 21st August.
Highland - 23rd August.
Grampian - 25th August.
Strathclyde - 25th August.
Leicestershire - 30th August.
Tests will also be available at the Harlow rally on 21st
September and the Leicester amateur radio show on 24th and 25th
October. The closing dates for tests are approximately three weeks
prior to the date of the test and there are about 500 places
available at centres around the UK.
More new centres are expected to be set up shortly in
Cambridgeshire, Gwynedd, Lancashire, Staffordshire, the west
midlands, and south east England. Details of when these centres go
"on line" will be given as soon as we have them, so please do not
apply for these just yet.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
Solar flux levels fell further during the period 23rd to 29th
June, and they are now at lowest level since last October, the
lowest level since this information has been broadcast on GB2RS. The
mean level of decline since last February has been from 85 to the
present 65 units. For the 27th day running, the sunspot count
continued to be zero.
Geomagnetic activity has been mainly at quiet levels. The 27th
and 28th were unsettled because of a disintegrating filament which
slowly broke up between the 20th and 22nd. There was very little
particle input from the solar wind. There are no coronal holes at
present, and the INDA index between the 16th and 22nd was quiet.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies varied in a random way between
5.3MHz on 28th, and 6.7MHz on the 24th. The average for the period
was 6MHz. The darkness hour lows also varied; they were between
levels of 2.7MHz on the 24th and 3.5MHz on the 26th. The period
averaged 3MHz. Sporadic E occurred each day and was recorded for 5
hours on the 25th, mainly during daylight hours.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies continued to vary in a random
manner. A level of 6.8MHz was recorded on the 23rd, which was the
highest since last March, but the 28th was down to 4.5MHz. The
average for the period was 5.5MHz. The darkness hour lows varied
between 2MHz on the 28th and 3.4MHz on the 26th, giving an average
of 2.6MHz. There was some spread F during early mornings; this was
severe on the 24th and lasted for 14 hours. Sporadic E was reported
on the 23rd and 24th.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is expected to remain very low and there are no
signs of any activity or active regions developing. There may be
some restructuring taking place and not much can be expected until
this is established. Solar flux levels are not expected to change
and geomagnetic activity is again expected to be quiet or just
unsettled for most of the time.
Ionospheric daytime F2 critical frequency levels are expected
to be around 5MHz in the north and between 5.5 and 6MHz in the
south, which is hardly different from levels at present. The low
geomagnetic activity is helping to offset the low F2 levels. Spread
F can be expected in the north after midnight.

DX NEWS.
-------
Ross Forbes WB6GFJ will be active once more in the south
Pacific from 7th July to 11th August. Ross will be using the
callsign FO0FB and his favourite SSB frequencies are 14.145 and
14.180MHz. European stations would do well to listen on those
frequencies after 0300 GMT. FO0FB will be operating from Tahiti
until 17th July and from Takaroa in the Tuamotu islands between the
20th and 31st July. More news of this DX-pedition in a later
broadcast.
The RSGB apologises to all those who read the article in the
July issue of Radio Communication and have been trying to use the
RSGB DataBox this week. The DataBox crashed, probably as a result of
last week's power failure in Potters Bar. It should be available
again later this week.
The RSGB QSL bureau will be closed for the whole of August.
Please do not send any cards to G3DRN just before or during the
month.
The Post Office has informed RSGB that the latest callsigns
issued as of Tuesday 1st July were in the G0FF and G1TU series.
